The

GYROTONIC® Method

AN EXPANSION TOWARDS LIFE

A unique, holistic approach to movement. Some of the benefits of a regular Gyrotonic practice include a healthier, more supple spine, increased range of motion, greater joint stability, improved agility and athletic performance and a deep internal strength. Experienced Gyrotonic trainers offer personalized sessions that are adapted to fit the needs of all ages and abilities.

The Gyrotonic Method is a unique movement method that addresses the entire person by stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and improving strength and movement efficiency.  With the Gyrotonic exercises, each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression.  These carefully crafted sequences create balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility.

The human body is designed to work as one harmonious system, to follow arcing and spiraling paths of motion, and to transition from one movement to the next smoothly and efficiently.

The Gyrotonic Method utilizes specialized equipment to guide, assist, and challenge the exerciser.  Because the equipment is highly adjustable, it can be customized to fit each person's unique physique and ability, adapting for things such as height, arm/leg length and range of motion.

People from all walks of life take Gyrotonic classes, including fitness enthusiasts, senior citizens, accomplished athletes, and people recovering from an injury or dealing with a disability.  Gyrotonic exercises help athletes improve their performance, and rehabilitation clients recover more quickly and fully post injury.

Nagare offers specialized, personal movement efficiency training with The Gyrotonic Method.

Lisa Roche

Owner, Studio Director

Certified Gyrotonic® Instructor

Reiki Master

Lisa started practicing the Gyrotonic Method in 2006 as a way to recover from a back injury.  With a background in competitive swimming, she was naturally drawn to the system's fluidity.  The multi-dimensional movements aided in recovery and introduced a much healthier and happier lifestyle.

In 2012, Lisa began her training with Tony Morales in NYC, continued her certification with Master Trainer, Billy Macagnone and received her final certification in Munstertal, Germany with Master Trainer, Leda Franklin.  She has received certifications for Musical Journey, Applications for the High Level Athlete, Shoulder Girdle Application, and Psoas Principles.  Nagare was established in 2013.

Using her training as a Reiki Master, Lisa specializes in combining the physicality of the Gyrotonic Method and the energetic nature of Reiki to facilitate a unique, multileveled healing experience.  Each session aims to address any immediate discomfort and release the root cause be it physical, emotional or energetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is your typical client?

The Gyrotonic Method is a unique movement method that can support a wide range of people.  It is utilized by professional athletes all over the world to improve their performance and increase strength and movement efficiency.  The system can benefit anyone who is recovering from an injury, experiencing physical limitations in any way or looking to balance their current exercise plan.  There is a meditative impact on the mind and body while performing the exercises, making The Gyrotonic Method impactful for anyone with anxiety.  In short, this movement method is perfect for anyone looking for increased freedom of movement and strength.

How is Gyrotonic different from yoga or pilates?

The main difference between the practices is the circular movement.  Unlike yoga, you are asked to move through a position to continue the flow of not only the exercise, but the energy as well.  The same can be said for a comparison to pilates; the movement is circular rather than linear, as on a reformer.  While pilates also works to strengthen the core, Gyrotonic aims to connect every movement through the spine, thus working and energizing the entire body.

Can Gyrotonic be used in a weight loss program?

Gyrotonic can be as vigorous as you make it.  There can be cardiovascular components to a workout.  In general, Gyrotonic is a piece of your healthy lifestyle puzzle.  It is meant to bring balance to your body in every way - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

No offense, it looks like a torture device.  Does it hurt?

None taken!  When I first saw the tower, I was very intimidated and thought the same thing.  But, no, there is no pain. Because each motion is meant to stretch and strengthen, the body heals while moving.  Unlike most forms of exercise, which require the body to move in one way for several repetitions, Gyrotonic movements promote fluidity so joints are lubricated and blood flows easily to muscles.

Is Gyrotonic meant to be a full body work out, or could I target certain areas?

Both!  Since every session is customized to you and your body's needs, we can work on anything you'd like. However, you will always leave having had a balanced work out.

What kind of ailments could Gyrotonic aid in and are there any limitations that would hinder practicing Gyrotonic?

Because Gyrotonic addresses the spine, people are primarily looking to relieve back pain.  Other common issues are neck and shoulder pain, joint pain caused by over usage or arthritis, headaches, anxiety, sciatica, rehabilitation and mobility issues.

Most all limitations can be managed by taking care to make accommodations.  We use props to aid in any work out - pillows, wedges, stools - whatever is necessary for a client to feel safe and supported.

How often should I schedule sessions?

We recommend at least 1 session a week, but you could schedule 2 or 3.  In addition to each session with the equipment, you will receive homework - exercises you can do at home during the week without any specialized equipment.

What can I expect in the first session and what should I wear?

In the very first session, we will go over any limitations or concerns you might have and any goals you'd like to reach. You will be taught how to do the basic movements that are at the very core of every Gyrotonic exercise.

You should wear comfortable clothing, something you can move in, and socks.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy.  If you cancel within 24 hours of your scheduled session, you are responsible for paying the full session fee.

If you are requesting to reschedule within 24 hours of your scheduled session, and we are not able to accommodate moving your session within 24 hours, you are responsible for paying the session fee for the missed session and the new scheduled session.
